The Mekong Delta is delimited by the tributaries of the Mekong River and is an area criss-crossed by a dense network of canals which is excellent for the cultivation of rice and growing fruit trees. The sun shines all year round in the Mekong and there is NO winter. However, every year between August and October, the water of the Mekong River rises flooding the delta.
We caught a 2 hour bus ride to the Mekong River where we got into a boat to explore the delta and the river. There we visited some small islands where they make coconut candy, rice noodles and the unicorn island where we had lunch. It was good to get out of the city, but we spent a lot of time on the bus and on the boat as well. The scene around the Mekong delta was not what we had expected; we did not see the lush green rice fields as we did in the north. However, we did meet some really nice couples whom were traveling from England, as well as Richmond. You heard right Richmond, B.C. about 4 blocks away from Rav’s house, can you say small world. We enjoyed dinner with the two couples we had met: Louise and Mark from Newcastle, England and Orlando and Julie from Richmond, BC. We ended up taking a ferry across the river and stayed the night in Can To City not far from the Mekong Delta and after some food and drinks called it a night. We spent the next day again on a bus and a boat to the floating markets and got a taste of some of the local villages along the Mekong River.
Tomorrow we are off to explore a very historic site…the Cu Chi tunnels….
