France - An Overview

France for the most part was a great place to visit, especially if you like museums, wine and good food. Masterful artwork can be seen at most museums and there are definitely some worth seeing in each city. The French’s devotion to their faith is second to none, as there are many wonderful churches such as the Notre Dame, which can be found in most cities. The architecture of these spaces and buildings is simply majestic, with its architectural style ranging from Gothic, Roman, Renaissance, Neo-Classism, Baroque and Art Nouveau. We were delightfully surprised by the affordable accommodations found throughout all of France and the transportation system was superb (except for those stairs in the metro, right Natty??). Albeit the soldiers walking around with their fingers on the triggers to their machine guns was a little too much for us but hey, better safe than sorry. With every city that we visited, there was always an information booth close by if not at the train station, and we were always able to find a hotel within a couple of hours. As we travelled through different regions in France the geography stayed the same, but the climate changed from cool in the Normandy area to sweltering hot in the French Riveria.

Paris exceeded its reputation for us, and the city was quite large with plentiful amount of things to see and do. You can spend the entire three weeks there and still have not done it all. With the wines cheap and flowing and the croissants fresh and tasty, from morning to night our palates were always content. However, we found the constant appearance of graffiti defacing buildings and its not so friendly people to be two of the main drawbacks to visiting France. We found the charming little cities of Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Bayeaux to be among some of our favourites for they offered the richness of the larger cities, but on a more personal level. And of course sharing France with a good friend of ours added to the whole experience there and made it very memorable.

We’ll definitely be visiting France again in the future….
