Living in a treehouse...this is Olympos

Merhaba (hello) everyone from Olympos, Turkey!! After a quick 2 hour bus ride from Antalya, we found ourselves at what would be called home for the next two nights at Kadir’s Yoruk Treehouses. This area was once an ancient Roman city but now is known as one of the most popular backpacker stops in Turkey because it’s cheap, you get to stay in rustic tree houses, there are no carpet shops (or any other shops or banks for that matter) and there is rumor that there is availability of a certain herb (as per the Lonely Planet). The fine beach, interesting ruins and fabulous setting in a steep forested valley are the highlights that Chris and I were looking forward to. (Side picture – Kadir’s Treehouses – definitely not your regular looking accommodation)

As soon as we arrived, we were welcomed by a New Zealander who worked at the bar and offered us a couple of brewskies on the house. While we sipped our cool beers, we looked around at our surroundings and quickly realized that nothing here offered a sense of Turkey that we had envisioned. There was a photo shoot taking place that weekend, lots of single foreigners lounging around and at night, a crazy and loud bar scene that never seemed to end. Add to this, the not so tasty vegetarian dinners (which were included in the room cost) and the paper thin walls of our tree houses where everything and anything could be heard and you can understand why we were questioning whether we were in Turkey or not.

Despite this fact, we made the best of the situation and enjoyed the natural beauty that Olympos had to offer. We spent our days hiking through the dense forest to find ruins of the ancient city and taking the occasional dip in the Mediterranean Sea to cool off from both the heat and the hikes.

Next, we are off on a four day, three night gulet cruise from Olympos to Fethiye. We are looking forward to meeting new people, relaxing and enjoying a boat cruise to discover other parts of Turkey.

Our tree house – definitely a different experience

On top of the world…yet again…
